i have to admit though that in my case it was simply user error. i somehow (negligence) failed to populate the /etc/fstab entries, leading to my boot partition not being mounted. this caused mkinitcpio to be unable to do its thing while upgrading, leading to a kernel mismatch at reboot and therefore missing drivers and the system partially shitting itself. i did fix that though, and now i can enjoy a working and upgradeable system... until the next inevitable breakage
